Derby #1's theme was "One." This is the first design that I did for the derby and I spent, maybe, 10 minutes on it. Even though it was submitted late on Monday, I was able to get 72 votes. Less than a 10th of what I would have needed to win, but I was still encouraged by it.

I started off the second derby with this design. The theme of the derby was "Heat." It didn't turn out quite how I'd pictured it, but I was in a hurry so I could submit as close as possible to when the derby opened. This was during the time when they announced the theme right when they opened up for submissions, and the first designs submitted seemed to have an advantage. My final vote total for this one was 34.

The second design I submitted to the derby was done on Saturday. It was my highest scoring design of the derby with 47 votes. I'll confess that other than the fact that it's a hot dog, it really had little to do with the theme "heat."

The final design I made for the derby, submitted mid-day on Monday. It's been noted that unless your design really catches on, submitting later than first thing Monday dooms any chance of winning. Final vote total was 24. It was after this derby that I decided from then on I was going to submit only zombie designs. That way, even if I scored low, I would have fun playing.

Now we jump to derby #4. I didn't take part in #3 because the theme was "Superhero" and I didn't want to be accused of ripping off Marvel Zombies. The theme this time around was "Maps" and this design was the closest I've come to winning yet with over 300 votes. I forgot to write down the final tally, however I did finish in 6th place.

Derby #5's theme was "Light." My first design was also my highest voted design with 121 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
Next up was the zombie light bulb. It received 75 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
My late entry to the derby was entitled "Brainbow" It received 38 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
I decided to redo "Brainbow" and resubmitted it late on Monday. In spite of that, it got 83 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
Derby #6's theme was "Sports." It's also the derby where I revised my decision to only submit zombie designs. Instead, I will now submit at least one zombie design. "The Zombunny Brainers" got 195 votes and ended in 13th place. The winning design, as it happened, was also a zombie design. Just not one of mine. Did it depress me? Certainly.

carousel_thumb
My non-zombie design of the derby. To say that "Sports" didn't inspire me to greatness would be like saying, "Look! A duck!" while standing hip deep in ducks. 73 votes. Placing too far down for me to bother counting.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
Derby #7 was about "Sound." "Brainbox" got 116 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
It may have done better if I had submitted it with the text. At least then it might have made more sense. But there is a strong anti-text sentiment in the forum, and I let that influence my decision. So, un-submitted and no votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
I really thought this one would do better. I submitted it either Saturday or Sunday. Part of the challenge of the derby is submitting at the right time, getting in the "Hotness Box" and getting seen. In hindsight the design would have been fine without the "Who knew?" Final votes = 24.

Derby #8 created the biggest controversy in awhile with its somewhat open theme of "Blank is the New Pirate" and its extremely lax pace of rejections. "Zombie Cowboy" got 137 votes, finishing in 20th place. And for the second time, I placed behind another zombie design: "Zombie Monkey in the Cool of the Night" finishing in 11th place.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
I should have given him a mouth. 61 votes.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
For derby #9 – "Summer Into Fall" – I did something dumb. I had the design done by late Friday night, but I held off on submitting until Sunday, just to see what would happen. What happened was I got 54 votes and ended up in 63rd Place. Maybe it was the design, or maybe it was the timing. Ah well.

Derby # 10: City Without Words. My entry was titled "Fitting In." Final votes: 100. 32nd place.

carousel_thumb

carousel_thumb
My last design that will be in this gallery is titled "Mind Blowing." As of now the votes are still in the single digits. Rejected on day 2 of the derby: "Power lines aren't uniquely urban." So be it.

I probably won't be setting up another of these galleries until after derby #20 passes. In the meantime, if you are at all interested in what I'm doing you can go to my Derby Entries page in "Projects."
